Broadway is one of the most famous and historic streets in New York City. It was carved out by Native Americans, then widened by Europeans, and is today the main north-south thoroughfare through Manhattan Island.

The name of the street, which runs from City Hall to the Bronx, has become synonymous with American theater. It is home to 40 professional theatres, most of which are located in Midtown between 42nd and 53rd Streets.

A Broadway show is a musical, drama or comedy performed on a stage in a theatre with a seating capacity of 500 or more. There are currently 41 such theatres in operation, each offering its own distinctive history and a wealth of ground-breaking productions.

Whether or not a show is considered a “Broadway” show depends on the terms of its contract with various unions. These include Actors Equity Association, United Scenic Artists, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and the American Federation of Musicians.

Over 42 million visitors flock to the park each year for recreational pursuits. They enjoy its beautiful gardens, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ice skating rinks and many other activities.
