The Israeli airlines el al offers flights between the country’s main airport and a range of other destinations. They have codeshare agreements with a number of airlines and fly to destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America.
Since being privatized in 2005, EL AL’s management has adhered to financial responsibility and has raised passenger service and comfort to a high standard. However, profitability has fluctuated significantly and is impacted by rising fuel prices.
The history of el al airlines
Founded in 1948, el al airlines is Israel’s national airline. Since then, it has built a reputation for efficient and punctual service, polished professionalism and incomparable Israeli hospitality.
The airline began humbly, with two used DC-4s purchased in 1949 from American Airlines, which inaugurated scheduled passenger service. It subsequently acquired Lockheed Constellations, Bristol Britannias and Boeing 707 jet airliners, eventually adding Boeing 720s.
As the threat of terrorist attacks grew, El Al developed its tough security measures, including manning every flight with undercover armed guards and sealing the cockpit area. It was these innovations that helped prevent the Lod Airport massacre in 1972, when Arab terrorists attacked four EL AL flights and killed passengers.
In 1971, El Al bought its first Boeing 747, a 400-seat jumbo jet that revolutionized its operations. It soon introduced nonstop service from Tel Aviv to New York, flying against prevailing winds and staying in the air for 13 hours. This was a world record for the longest commercial flight at the time and has stood the test of time.
