Discovery Princess is the new Royal Class vessel from Princess Cruises. She was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy and will begin sailing a series of Mexican Riviera and California coast voyages from Los Angeles.
The vessel features a 270-degree balcony; a 28-foot glass-floored ‘sea walk’; a theater; and dining options from Michelin-starred chefs. It also offers touchless ‘Medallion’ technology for passengers who can open cabin doors and pay for onboard purchases with a wearable device.
Entertainment
Princess Cruises ships offer a variety of theater and lounge entertainment, including a Broadway-style production show in the main theater, comedians in secondary venues and live music throughout the ship. The line also turns the main pool areas into outdoor movie theaters at night, reconfiguring the lounge chairs to face the screen and bringing out blankets to ward off the evening chill.
The Princess Theatre is the largest of all Princess Cruises’ theaters and features dazzling stage sets, artists from around the world and modern hits. It also hosts several original shows, such as “Rock Opera,” which expertly blends classic rock, musical theater and opera with breathtaking costumes and choreography.
The Princess Theatre also has a new show, “Spotlight Bar,” which is a big-budget musical that takes place in a local bar and features song and dance numbers. Other new productions include “The Voice of the Ocean” and an audience participation game show.
Dining
Discovery princess offers a wide variety of dining options on board. There are three main dining rooms named after different Alaska ports, the World Fresh Marketplace buffet and several other eateries to choose from.
Each venue offers a different set of food items and pleasant service. If you want to try a premium experience, check out Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria for pasta courses with fresh seafood or Crown Grill for premium aged beef and fresh seafood.
For a more casual setting, Ocean Terrace seafood bars serve sushi and sashimi while Gelato serves classic flavours and toppings. You can also indulge your sweet tooth at the Chocolate Journeys program where a delectable creation is offered each night.
Activities
Onboard Discovery Princess, you’ll find a full range of activities for every age. Designed to make your cruise vacation fun, exciting and educational.
The ship’s extensive selection of entertainment options includes dazzling stage sets, Broadway hits and classic songs performed by talented performers. Original musical productions in the Princess Theatre are crafted by world-class directors and choreographers to transport you to realms as exotic as the destinations you’ll explore.
For a relaxing evening, relax with a drink at Crooners Bar surrounded by mellow piano music or the Vista Show Lounge, where you’ll enjoy live performances and comedians.
You’ll also discover a host of other entertainment options throughout the ship. From interactive culinary shows to a live concert and late night comedy and game shows, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy your time onboard Discovery Princess.
Among the amenities offered on board is a small wearable device called the Ocean Medallion that enables you to take advantage of everything from faster boarding and locating your friends, to enhanced service like having whatever you need delivered directly to you.
Staterooms
Discovery princess offers a range of staterooms for guests to choose from. These range from mini-suites to premium suites and sky suites.
The best part about the staterooms at discovery princess is that they all have large balconies. These are bigger than those on many of the line’s competitors, including Royal Caribbean.
Balcony cabins on Discovery Princess measure 181 square feet (not including a 41-square-foot balcony), and some of the newer vessels — like Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess — have “premium deluxe balcony” cabins that are even larger.
While you can save money by booking a balcony cabin on this ship, the downside is that you’ll have an obstructed view of the promenade deck. It will also be difficult to escape from the wake of other passengers on decks above you. Plus, you’ll have to get up early to use your balcony. If you don’t want to be bothered, consider booking one of the aft corners on decks 9-12 instead.
